Life as a Sustainability Manager

Learn about the different types of careers in the sustainability and innovation fields. The speakers will address how became interested in sustainability, how that path unfolded – including twists and turns -- from college, the evolution of the sustainability management field, what they do in their current job, and advice for students who want jobs in sustainability management.

LeeAnn Glover is the Real Estate and Workplace Solutions Director and one of the founders of sustainability at American Family Insurance. She has been with American Family for 29 years and earned a Master’s degree in Sustainability Leadership from Edgewood College. In 2013 she was the recipient of the InBusiness magazine Sustainability Visionary of the Year. LeeAnn has served on the Board of the Wisconsin Sustainability Business Council and was a Fellow for the Nelson Institute in 2012.

Mark Starik is President and Head Coach of Always Be Sustaining, LLC, based in Madison, Wisconsin. Always Be Sustaining provides sustainability management services via coaching, consulting, communications, and collaboration, serves both individual and small group “sustainers”, as well as those at the organizational and community levels. The firm has applied for certification as a “B Corp” (meaning it embeds societal and environmental benefits in its mission statement and attempts to meet a higher than typical level of transparency and accountability). Mark has earned the Certified Sustainability Professional designation from the International Society of Sustainability Professionals. Prior to his academic career, Mark held environmental/energy positions in several Mid-Western government and non-profit organizations.
